Mr. Jens Galschiøt
Danish Sculptor best known for the Pillar of Shame.
Jens Galschiøt, a prominent Danish sculptor renowned for his iconic creation, the 'Pillar of Shame,' stands as an internationally celebrated artist of late modernity, marking his artistic prowess after 1980. The 'Pillar of Shame' was originally erected in Hong Kong during British rule, shortly before the city's handover to China in 1997, eventually finding a new home at the University of Hong Kong. However, in 2021, the university ordered the removal of this politically charged sculpture. Galschiøt's artistic portfolio spans a broad spectrum, encompassing everything from intricate jewelry and small figurines to colossal sculptures with significant socio-political themes. He is particularly recognized as one of the most prominent Danish artists on the global stage, with his influence resonating in places as diverse as Hong Kong, Mexico, Germany, Spain, and the United States. Beyond his sculptures, Jens Galschiøt also organizes international events to shed light on prevailing global imbalances. Currently, he suspects that the Hong Kong government may have issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with his 'Pillar of Shame' memorial and its implications.
