Dr. Lokman Tsui is a scholar, writer and activist who researches freedom of speech, digital rights and Hong Kong. He is a Fellow with the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto. Lokman’s previous roles include Assistant Professor with the School of Journalism at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (2014-21), Google’s Head of Free Expression for Asia and the Pacific (2010-14), and Faculty Associate with Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society (2015-17). He received his Ph.D degree from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, where his award winning dissertation is a critical interrogation of how new technologies challenge us to rethink journalism. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Lokman managed the unofficial website for filmmaker Wong Kar Wai for many years. He is writing a book, a personal history of authoritarianism.
