Mr. Sam Tam
PhD Researcher in Fine Art, based in the UK.
Sam Tam is an artist and researcher. He has been actively showing his work, garnering significant recognition and media coverage. Currently, he is pursuing his PhD in Fine Art at an institution which he chooses to keep confidential. Sam’s ongoing research investigates whether Hong Kong is a nation, based on the way in which a common imaginary of democracy has been manifested and embodied in the arts. His working hypothesis posits that activist art served as the signifier of the discourse of democracy. Through a systematic data collection and interviews, his aim is to conduct a textual, historical, and visual analysis on the life spans of artworks; and look at Hong Kong’s pro-democracy social movements from a holistic approach. At its core, this research project endeavours to curate a comprehensive collection or archive of materials, which includes the documentation of anthems, graffiti, and sculptures dispersed throughout the city, all of which serve as expressions of the pro-democracy movement, retracing the period of pro-democracy movements.
